I saw that - such fun! Geelong's mayor seems to have taken it in good part.

What great fun! Geelong's mayor looks to be a bit eccentric, himself? The nice thing about Yarn bombing is that it doesn't leave any lasting marks or damage.

Is that pieces of colourful cloth that are wrapped around the pole?

yes, they are bits of fabric
a bit if a change from knitting & easier to do, too, just rip up some fabric/fabrics.

I wonder how they are attached to make them stay in place? Start at the bottom and work up?

The Australian National Folk Festival next year will have some very pretty bollards! Knit the National – Bollard Creations CompetitionKnit the National is a new project to decorate the Festival Site in 2015. Part of this initiative was our successful CD weaving project at Floriade earlier this year. Now we have decided to take it up a notch with our Bollard Creations Competition. Many of you will be aware that there are plenty of bollards around the EPIC site. An idea was brought to the table to do some yarn bombing, in particular, to create something out of wool to dress the bollards. This will create a bright and beautiful art installation for this year’s festival. If you knit, you’re invited to participate, and add a colourful piece to the 2015 Festival. (read on & admire the pics!) google image search on guerilla knitting bollardsflickr guerilla knitting (love those sheeps!! and the statue wearing a red cardigan ...

What a cute idea! I like that the examples shown in the competition were covers that made the bollard look like something else, a mushroom, a lighthouse, etc.
There certainly must be a lot of knitters with extra yarn creating all the interesting covers shown in the guerilla knitting images.

The bike is covered beautifully! Too bad it can't be ridden when it's covered.
There are many interesting Facebook sites that may be viewed by non members. My Love Affair with Newtown looks like a great one to follow.

one of my other collections is cartoons & I follow about 20 Australian sites daily, including a number of facebook sites. Strangely enough one of my favourite cartoonists whose cartoons are printed in one of Australia's largest newspapers has a private site & his work does not appear on the paper's cartoon site! So I tend to cut his cartoons out & scan them as I no longer keep paper cartoons.
I cut out my first cartoon in 1969 from a magazine our school librarian was throwing out & have several large scrap books & lots of envelopes of un-filed cartoons.

ps. I also follow Doonesbury & have for decades
