www.abc.net.au/news/2013-03-12/guerilla-knitters-take-over-the-world/4566772 Yarn-bombing is a global craze which is much like graffiti for people who would not ordinarily break the rules. It has reached Adelaide and popped up most recently in the hills town of Stirling. Hundreds of school children, scouts, craft club members and individuals spent hours creating knitted and crocheted works to display outside the Coventry Library. "I knew it would really spark the imagination of the community up here. I just knew it's the sort of thing our community would really enjoy," said children's librarian Jo Kaeding. She helped organise the yarn-bombing display as part of the Adelaide Fringe festival. "Having younger children myself, I know that they love craft and so all you need to do is show them how and they're on board," she said. (read on & look at the pretty pics!)

Another beautiful display, Sandra! It's nice to see that young children can be involved. What a great experience for them!
It occurred to me what a boon this must be for yarn producers. Even if many people are using up leftover yarn that was being stored, that will lead to a need to purchase new yarn when that is all gone.

What a beautiful result! Amazing that there were so many "blankets" donated for the project.
I like that there is a plan to remove them again, wash them and distribute them where they can be useful.

I attended a concert last night at a converted warehouse - now the Red Rattler www.redrattler.org/. All the fittings & decoration were recycled & scrounged & mostly red, the seats were a collection of old sofas & comfy chairs (most red). It was a fascinating place, so much to look at - one of the best bits was a very long piece of guerrilla knitting covering what might have been water pipe along one side of the interior. (Red rattlers were trains www.nswrail.net/locations/photo.php?name=NSW:Punchbowl:1 in use in Sydney back in the olden days - I remember them well.

Very interesting video. It looks as if yarn bombing is evolving.
Maeve, it sounds as if it may look like a basket of yarn exploded in your room. Do you have enough knitting done to show us the progress?

This isn't about yarn bombing...except it kind of is! westknits.com/index.php/2013/11/swants-tutorial/I loved the semi-serious tough guy models wearing their new swants. Finally I have a good reason to buy more rummage sale sweaters. Think of kids' snow pants, walking pants, lounge-around-the-house pants.

They would be a very warm under layer, but I don't think I could bring myself to wear them out in public......perhaps when I was young and silly I may have, but now I would look like an old bag lady if I tried!

(Australia) Geelong Mayor's lion statues decorated 'with love'Winters in Geelong can be rather cold, but the city's Mayor did not think the lions that guard his house needed rugging up. Someone else thought otherwise. This morning, Darryn Lyons discovered the two lion statues outside his house near Geelong's Western Beach had been "yarn bombed", complete with mayoral chains. Yarn bombing involves stealthily covering public property - such as lamp posts, statues, trees and bike racks - with knitting. Councillor Lyons said he did not know who was responsible for the knitted scarves, which match the mayor's pink mohawk, but he appreciated that someone had obviously put a lot of energy into it. A note attached to one of the scarves did not give much away. "Bombed with love - Midwinter Yarnbombers," it read. (check out 2 pics & links to other articles) journalists! can't they tell crochet from knitting
