Dave, that sounds like loads of fun. I think you should sing. And I also think all of us should request specific songs for you to sing. Let's see, "My Old Kentucky Home"........maybe "The Leaving of Liverpool"........."Red is the Rose"........hmmmmmmm........this will take some thought.

I went to the quilt show in Paducah yesterday. It's a 3 hour drive from here (actually 4 hours coming home because I missed a turn and ended up in Tennessee), but I had a great time. Jennie, the winner was from Australia! www.kfvs12.com/Global/story.asp?S=10229348&nav=menu51_2

Lucky you, Mary, I would like to go to the Paducah show! I have seen this quilt, it won Best of Show two years ago here in Sydney and went on to win Best of Australia (state winners are judged for Best of Australia) and also won that year at the Houston show. It is stunning, magnificent, all that..... This lady, I have been told, makes quilts for one purpose and one purpose only, and that is to win prizes. Her work is beautiful and she documents how many yards of thread and how many hours of work go into each quilt she makes. It apparently took four years to make this one. Geez....I make quilts for gifts, or just because I want to try a particular colour or pattern. I don't enter shows, I'm not competitive. The quilt I finished just before Easter is the latest post on my blog bronzewombat.blogspot.com/ and it's green!! I love green.

For those of you wondering what the winning quilt looks like, here 'tis: www.mariyawaters.com/MakingRR5.htmJennie, I love your blog. I'll read more when I have time. When you take a picture of a quilt, is it better to get someone to hold it up? I've taken pictures on the floor, and they are a bit distorted in perspective.

The winning quilt is definitely wow! but I couldn't live with it. But then I couldn't live with quilts! I don't have room for them & I'm not interested in making one. I like my old (commercial) quilt cover - aqua colours with herons or some other long-legged water bird - & don't see any reason to replace it. The members of my patchwork & craft group have given up urging me to make a quilt. I make small stuff - wall hangings & small panels. But I do have room for books & I've just finished my (first) book! Its 12" square with calico pages & foamcore covers covered with Japanese-style fabric. Inside are 9 quilted patchwork panels of kimonos. Another book is needed as I made a similar sized panel of Japanese fabrics that is not a kimono so it needs a home & I have lotsa' other designs I want to make. 4 photos posted my.opera.com/sandra%20in%20sydney/albums/Cover was photographed on a pillow case as its too much hassle to unpack my quilt! Photos of the other pages will follow sometime soon. I'm currently working on a sashiko panel - this will have a back (it's untidy!) & it will be a wall-less wallhanging - cos I have no walls left to display stuff! Scroll down to Sashiko panel to see the panel - users.tpg.com.au/taylore/news.htm - mine is the blue one illustrated. sandra ps. Jennie's blog is always good reading.

I'm not sure if this counts, but I regestered some time ago to take part in this. If my name is one of those out of the hat, I'll let you know Dave that sounds like a wonderful opportunity. I hope that you are one of those who are selected. How do you plan to spend your hour?

"How do you plan to spend your hour?
Do you really think I'm that organised?
I have a few ideas around representing a range of times with the general concept of ways we are the same as those living in the 17th century and how we are different (for example); but I haven't really fleshed it out yet and might well end up doing something entirely different.

The quilts look absolutely amazing! But I could never have one of those award type ones in my house - they don't look like a home quilt. What would you *do* with it?
Dave, I think that sounds fascinating. I was daydreaming a few weeks ago, thinking about my family in the early 1900s, and wishing I had a TARDIS to go and visit.
Then it occurred to me that they'd think I'm a rather useless individual. I don't know the money system (pounds, shillings and pence - how many what in which?), I couldn't cook (don't know how to without an electric or gas oven with a set temperature - let alone in non-metric ºF or measuring ingredients in fluid ounces and pounds!), have no idea how to ride a horse or drive a horse and buggy, don't know how to use a dip-pen, can't really sew without a sewing machine let alone work in feet and inches when measuring...and the list goes on. All whilst wearing a corset. Eep.

HI I am not sure if I am doing this right??? I have ordered the canvass and wool to do a 6 ft by 40 " rug hooking of the crest of the Yukon Territories for my son who lives in Whitehorse. I have zillions of projects here at home , but new is always a challenge. Joan Joan and I traced the design of her rug on the canvas tonight. I think it turned out well. It's a very ambitious project. The design: Cutting off excess canvas and the 100 bundles of rug yarn

Wow, that's going to be impressive! Having never done anything like that before...do you start in one spot and then just work in a line from there, or do you do fiddly bits first? Such as the more intricate looking bits on the dog (?) at the top?

HI there, Thanks to my dear friend, the tracing is done and I have started hooking today. I have started on the shield from the bottom up and will leave the edges ( all in white) to the last ,in case I run out of wool . It will be 32,000 pieces of wool and I believe it took me 3 hours to do 320 pieces. Hope I live long enough to finish Right now I am Gung HO hope I can keep up the enthusiasm 6 months from now. The son this is for is coming from Whitehorse in the Yukon in about a month and I hope there is something done to show him. I am going to go back to Whitehorse with him for a short holiday.

Joan, Does this mean that you've filled three squares already? Well done! Here's a picture of the crest that Joan will be hooking For anyone who wonders where Whitehorse is, it's in the Yukon Territory of Canada. To view a map which locates Whitehorse in the world, click here. The dog's leg-shaped province under the Yukon is British Columbia (BC) Joan and I live in the centre of BC so Joan will have quite a drive to her son's home and a long bus ride home again. rags
