What a fabulous idea, making quilts for the fire victims! I wanted to send a copy of my book to the primary schools that were burnt (for their libraries), but they're not taking donations of books and stationery any more as there is no room for storage. Ah well, the thought was there.
Sorca, it sounds like you're hard at work on your house. I envy people with the DIY gene.

Allie - my craft group made 5 or 6 quilts for bushfire victims - I've tried to find the article that appeared in the local paper but I can't. My bit was cutting some sewn pieces, ironing other bits & contributing to the batting! Members spent weeks designing, cutting, sewing & quilting. Our state Quilters Guild coordinated the efforts of groups. While they were quilting, I was kept busy with my doll who was finished about two hours ago - pics were loaded here- my.opera.com/sandra%20in%20sydney/albums/show.dml?id=309776?&abc=&page=3&skip=40&show=&perscreen=20 page 3 of Craft album - Pics of underwear, under kimono & obi, white shiro-maku kimono & tsuno kkushi hood worn in religious ceremony, gold uchikake kimono worn over shiro maku at the reception. The mohair wig is too fluffy as traditional styles are waxed, but my attempt at making a wig from Fimo modelling clay didn't work (it would have been perfectly smooth when combed!) nor did an attempt using 4ply wool (too thick & too stranded). Hair accessories were fun to make & give a good impression of the real ones! Other accessories were also fun - fan was copied from a pattern in the book, & altho. the leaf is real, it doesn't have ribs so it can't open (but them it isn't opened in the ceremony.) The hakoseko bag isn't meant to open either, & the encased sword kaiken is nowadays just a bit of something stiff wrapped in material. I worked from a Japanese language book with a bit of translation done by Japanese acquaintances, a lot of guesswork & fudging & recutting pieces & lots of naughty words when stuff didn't do as it was supposed to. eek, in 10 hours she will be included in the Doll club's popular vote competition for Internatinal Brides, so maybe I'd better head to bed. sandra

thanks, rags - she now has a 3rd prize card! I'll also be entering her in the club's needlework competition next year, a much more serious event as the judges are member of the Embroiderer's Guild.
I displayed her with a label explaining what was what & gave a short talk on traditional Japanese wedding costume, & have also been asked to send an article to the club's magazine because many members expressed interest in the details.
When I got home I cleaned my table enough to do a jigsaw, next thing is to clear enough space on my shelves to fit the doll & her gold kimono. And catch up on all the things (like minutes for a committee meeting on Wed & some urgent publicity for folk events) that fell by the wayside while I finished her.

Oh, congratulations, Sandra. I'm sure the talk about the costume was well received. It's always nice to know the 'whys' and 'hows' about something so you can become informed rather than just commenting 'gosh, that's pretty'.

Sandra, Congratulations!
You research your projects so thoroughly, I'm sure your talk was very interesting and your labels very informative. Your creations appear to be museum quality.
Great that you are able to catch up now. It must be hard to switch gears after such an intense project?

now that the Big Project is over, I'm not sure what to do next - I have ongoing stuff that I'll probably take to Craft Group tomorrow while I decide which idea to start but in the meantime check this out www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/07/07/2618589.htm for the latest on the Trafalgar square living statues project!

Sandra, I'll be looking forward to seeing what your next project will be.
Thank you for the link to the Trafalgar square living statues project. Will Dave be one of the people on the plinth?

Sandra, what beautiful things you make, it's all such intricate work and and researched so carefully, it's great for us to be able to see it all, best of luck with the next competition.

It's been pretty hectic around here, which is the only feeble excuse I have for not logging on for ages.
I mentioned over at Mudcat that I hadn't got a place in the first two draws for the artwork that involves standing on a plinth in London for an hour. So here's a maths exercise for you. There are 227 places for my area and 1819 applicants. There are four draws for places, at the start of each month, drawing 552, 552, 552 and 551 names, respectively.
Q1: What was the probability of getting a place before the the first draw took place? Q2: What is the probability now?
Show your working!

Whoops - I hope no-one tried that sum: That's what comes of typing at 5:37am. There are 57, 57, 57 and 56 places, not 552 etc. Sorry about that!

Probability doesn't really matter, you have two more chances to be chosen.
How many times did you enter?
My son put one entry into a draw to be an Olympic torchbearer for one km in the run across Canada in 1986. His name was drawn. Others who were drawn had submitted up to 200 entries. I'll wager that others whose names were not drawn had submitted multiple entries too.

I'm in the process of tearing down and rebuilding/moving the lower section of this "tree house" as the tree has grown so much it's destroying it.
