We will spend our time in Toronto. The accommodation is a very nice self-contained suite so we can prepare our own meals, and it's not far from our son - he doesn't have the space for us to stay but that's OK. We might hire a car for a week or so and I would love to drive a bit north to see the fall colours. Last visit we hired a car and drove to Niagara Falls for the weekend, we couldn't be that close and not see the Falls! I also found out recently that there is a folk club, Acoustic Harvest, not far away; we didn't know about that on our last visit, I am ticked off about that.
We have only seen such a little bit of Canada - Vancouver, Victoria, Toronto - but we love it.

I'm driving to Calgary, Alberta (800 KM/500 miles), leaving on Saturday. I'll most likely stop overnight, not drive all of it in one day. I'm hoping that there will be many animals to see (and photograph) along the sides of the highway as I drive through Jasper National Park.

HI all, I am off to Whitehorse , Yukon territory , Canada tomorrow morning. IT is 1500 miles from my home and we will drive 2 long days if no complications. I am travelling with my son in one truck pulling a utility trailer and my grandson driving another truck. I plan on staying about 10 days. I have broken a bone in my foot and wearing a cast so will not be doing much walking. I am planning on hooking on the rug ... and sipping tea!! Will let you know about all the animals I see later.

I think it will be good for your foot that you will be off work for two weeks. I hope that you won't be finding lots of work to do for your son at his house, instead. I hope that both trucks will behave well on those long stretches of road with no place to get help for car troubles. It's a long way to drive with few settlements along the way, but it's beautiful country. I hope that your son will let you get out and take pictures along the way. Whitehorse is a great place to spend the summer solstice, that far north it never gets dark.

Jennie, I wish that I lived about 3000 miles closer to Toronto so I could see you while you're here.
Have a wonderful time in Canada and safe travels. If you have time online while in Canada, please post here and tell us how your vacation is going along.

Thanks Rags - I'm sure we will have a lovely time! We don't have a laptop so are dependent on using our son's computer when we visit them. Have been finding out the weather forecast, seems the next couple of weeks at least are going to be cold.

Hi Jennie, How long will you be in Canada? I hope that you'll get some good weather. Where I live, it's close to freezing most days, this time of year.

We'll be in TO for three weeks. Last visit it was quite warm, unexpectedly so - most days in the mid to high 20s, one day was even 32 degrees, with the humidity on top of that it was like being in Sydney in summer. That was the last week of Sep and the first 10 days or so of Oct, so this visit is just a bit later. I've checked the two week weather forecast, it says maximum temps will range from 16 (that's OK) to about 7....that's getting a bit shivery! And it will be rainy too, but it's raining today in Sydney and is quite cool so we are getting in practice for Canada.
We complain about winter in Sydney, but it's quite mild compared to many other places. We are just a bunch of big wussies. I grew up in an inland town about 6 hours north-west where summers were hotter and winters much colder than Sydney.

7 - 16 C sounds lovely for this time of year. Hopefully it will only be rainy a small part of the time you're here.

2010 travel plans are to go to Disney World Florida U.S.A. in Jan for 2 weeks. My eyes are getting tired of searching out things by computor. I have been on days at a time this last week. I am sure it will be worth it! Myself , grown son and grandaughter 10 years old are going. I am packing the "gravol" already! If anybody has some advice We have all been to Disneyland before , and I have been to D.W. years ago with Husband. Well there is a saying " no fool like an old fool ' and I might even try a small roller coaster.! I try most rides anyway. This trip will help to pass the winter. Anyone else have plans?

Joan - I'm reminded of a commercial on TV several years ago. It showed some adult children talking about mom and dad going to Disney World. They were rolling their eyes and saying, "What in the world will they do there." Then you saw a picture of a middle-aged couple sliding down a water slide and having the time of their lives.
My only advice - with children, just let them set the pace and choose what to do. My kids were happier when we dumped Hubby under a shade tree and I just followed them when they did what they wanted to do.
Of course, you want to hit all the big rides, but kids get impatient when they have to stand in line so many times.
My other advice - when my kids were ~10 we went to Kings Island in Cincinnati every year just as our school was out, but the Ohio schools were still in session (no crowds). Each kid liked a different ride, so I would ride with each one in turn. BUT...........they rested between rides and I didn't! Needless to say after the swinging boat, twirling airplanes, then Beast of a roller coaster, I had to lean over the rail and throw up!
In later years one son gave me a mother's day card with a picture of a mother bunny rabbit riding a loop-de-loop roller coaster and clutching her handbag.
Back to your plans.......are you staying at one of the on site motels? Some friends just went and said for them it would be cheaper than trying to stay nearby. Everything in the park is terribly expensive. (I would carry snacks in my purse, as long as it was lightweight.) In the summer you need sunscreen, I don't know about January. Of course, I have to have comfortable shoes. I've had good luck with light weight disposable cameras - thus no need to keep up with my digital one. Be sure to post pictures for us. You'll love the flowers there.

We are home, and we had a lovely time! Our son is well and happy. Only one thing went wrong - I had a fall and broke my left arm, which is not much fun. I have written a little about our trip on my blog this morning - bronzewombat.blogspot.com/Typing with only one hand is a bit slow.......
