The weather this year has been kind to the trees and shrubs. In the 40 years I've lived here, I can't remember such abundant crops of Saskatoon Berries or Mountain Ash (Rowan) berries. The branches on my six Mountain Ash trees are all bending low under the weight. I had to remove one branch of the large tree beside my house because it was hanging down onto the deck.
I hope that the birds will benefit from the berries in winter. The crows, waxwings, tanangers, and other birds have been enjoying the Saskatoons since the first ones ripened in June and I have put enough berries into my freezer to be able to make several pies and some muffins during the winter months.
