My senior centre ladies craft group needs a new activity when it meets on the 8th. I think I have something they can manage. One day recently I remembered that, about 60 years ago, I had a cute pink yarn octopus with braided legs. I don't remember where/from whom I got it or what became of it. I thought it might be fun to try to make another one now. Google had lots of links to pictures and sites with instructions. I won't show you my first attempt. The instructions that I chose to use must have been for much thicker yarn because the white styrofoan "head" was nowhere near being covered when I used the number of strands of yarn given in the instructions. I modified the number and the length of the strands to cover a 1.5 inch ball, and then changed them again to cover a 2.5 inch ball. Yarn is on sale this week for $2 for 5 oz.. If the length given on the yarn wrapper is accurate and my calculations are correct, we can make 5 of the larger octopuses from one 5 oz skein. It should be an inexpensive craft. I'm fairly happy with the results, but would be happier with a "cuter" face design. The larger one isn't trimmed yet. I wanted to keep it to use to show the women how to finish theirs.

These look cute I remember something like this when I was young. Crafts can get expensive these days My crafty mojo seems to have gone on holiday and forgotten the way home

Glad you like them, Megan. I whacked some nails into boards for the women to use to measure their yarn. The pieces of yarn in this image will be 24 inches long if I cut it at each end. (or 48 inches long if I cut only one end.)

I like it, Megan, and good jig for measuring, rags. My first published writing was in a school newsletter, written at 6 years old. I wrote a one page fantasy adventure about my little sister's pink yarn octopus, very like these. (The octopus drank pink ink. )

Aw, Maeve, That must have been a very cute story. Was there a writing contest that you won to have it published? Did anyone keep the newsletter for you?
