I'm making a companion for my current arbor which I've lugged back and forth across the yard a couple of times, a practice which is hard on my knees and back and also on the joints in the arbor. I decided that I really need to have an arbor in each location. It started out here, supporting Red-osier Dogwood limbs Then became a "safe" food and water station for the birds and squirrel, kitty corner from where it had been.

Instead of using 2x4 boards again, I bought 2x3 boards, thinking the result will be a little lighter if I have to move it around. I hope it will be sturdy enough. My carport"workshop". All the pieces laid out on the driveway to check if I've forgotten to cut anything. The top boards fit together to see what spacing will look best.

Saturday night I drilled holes as needed and stained all the boards. I'm leaving them in the carport for another day to let the stain dry thoroughly. Tonight I put a fresh coat of stain on the old arbor. I wanted to get it done before it rains. We were away all day so I had to work in the dark with a light. Here it is in the dark: I hope it will look okay in daylight.

Sandra, Rain was predicted that night. Whereas the wood was nice and dry because we were coming to the end of several weeks of dry, hot weather, if the rain got into the wood it could be a long time before it was dry enough again to stain. I knew if I didn't do it then, I might have to wait until Spring.
It did rain that night. The stain protected the wood well.

Maeve, Thank you. The new arbor is in place. In the second shot, both arbors are visible. I expect the soccer playing grandchildren will view this as an invitation to play. The "old" arbor, back in it's original location rags

Rags, I'm so impressed with your work --- ESPECIALLY YOUR WORKSHOP! Do you actually use a radial saw? Hubby would faint if I got close to anything mechanical!
But when I worked in the lab, I had one project where I had to use a band saw and router. I'm such a clutz on the sewing machine, I really shouldn't use power tools.
Keep the pictures coming!

Sandra, There are many things that I'd like to work on but as our warm season is so short and we spend much of it traveling away from home, I don't get much done.
Mary, I'd love to have a band saw. There are so many things that one can make with one. I have a router, but find it difficult to hold with my wrist problems.
Yes, I use my radial arm saw. I'm the power tool user in the family. I like the radial arm saw because I can see where the blade is, relative to my hands, and it is easy to make accurate cuts. It takes some effort to get the big saw out from the locked shelter I built for it on the driveway and maneuver it down into the carport to work so I use the electric circular hand saw when accuracy is less important and for small jobs.

Thank you, Jenny.
I'm afraid it's been badly neglected this summer. I don't keep up well at the best of times and this year we were/are away much of the time, as well. There is so much weeding, clean up and bulb planting remaining to do. I'm hoping that the cold weather will wait a few weeks longer than usual to allow me time to get enough done.
