Sorry about my long absence! We just got back from a trip to lovely southwestern North Carolina! We spent time in and around the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. My husband and I played a concert, played for a contra dance, visited dear friends, went to see the Carolina Chocolate Drops, and my husband received a commission to make a violin. Two long days of driving there and back again, but we left a snowy New Hampshire winter and got to spend some time in Springtime weather: daffodils galore (one of my favorite flowers!) and budding redbud trees.
On our way home we took a slight detour to Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, to take the waters at the hot springs there. We did the minimalist Roman baths at the state park, and it was so relaxing and refreshing. That stop was marred only by the dreadful motel- we couldn't sleep, so were up and out the door by 3:30 am! Home two days ago, so glad to be here, but very grateful for the opportunity to make the trip.

Yesterday, my husband and I made a short (325 km, return) trip to spend the day with our nearest son and his family. On the way we passed through Vanderhoof, the town which boasts it is at the geographical center of British Columbia. It's also on a major migration flight path for Trumpeter Swans, Canada Geese and an assortment of ducks who will spend several weeks resting along the Nechako River during the night and foraging in various farm fields during the day. We arrived early in the morning when most of the birds were still on the river ice. I've never seen so many swans gathered in one place. As far as the eye can see by diffuse, on Flickr I tried to record the expanse of birds with a video. I panned too quickly for the image to be clear, but you can get an idea of how many there are and hear the sounds they make. It's obvious why they are named Trumpeter Swans. I've uploaded a few clearer still photos to Flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/diffuse/sets/72157633146580316/detail/

We went on a canoe trip Labor Day weekend. It was gorgeous and lots of fun. I'd like to do it again --- but without the granddaughters. They wanted us to race constantly and I was tired! Picture this -- about 30 canoes on the Elkhorn Creek, lovely scenery, perfect weather --- and little voices saying, "Go Nana Go"! Attachments:

Mary, It looks as if you had a good workout and lots of fun. I'm sure that the girls enjoyed it too. What a wonderful way to spend the weekend.
