the magnolia fascinated me - I have taken pics of it;s blooms before but never walked into the bed to get close enough to really look at the details.

Sandra, The magnolia is lovely! It's interesting to see so much detail. It must be wonderful to live where shrubs can flower in Autumn? The zygocactus is beautiful too. What a delicate colour.
Maeve, I envy you having the orioles. We don't have anything that colourful here. Are those pretty little purple and white flowers violets?
My tulips along the south side of the house all opened while we were away. It's been raining since Monday evening though so I can't get out with my camera.

There was a Stewartia tree in the garden of the chapel where TL and I were married (see photo). I spent our grocery money to buy one today, and it's full of buds waiting for summer. It may bloom into September. This one is a memorial for some younglings we want to remember and celebrate. Maeve Attachments:

Hi Jenny, Nice to see you posting. Sandra, Thank you for posting all the interesting links. It's difficult for me to wrap my head around March being autumn. I kept thinking, "Okay, it blooms in march (my spring), but when in autumn does it bloom?" ;D Maeve, The Stewartia blossoms look very pretty. Are they fragrant as well? Photos of some of the flowers blooming in my garden now are here: flickr.com/gp/diffuse/w3x3uk/ The petunias and lobelia are bedding plants that I bought at the supermarket. I'm waiting a while to plant them because I'm afraid there could be frost at night still. Thanks, rags

Maeve, what a beautiful flower - I can see why you love it!
Last weekend I bought a lemon balm plant, and some sweet pea seedlings which Bianca The Beautiful But Brainless (our white cat) chomped before I took them outside. It has been very dry here for quite a while but rain is forecast tomorrow, so the plan is to get them in the ground after the rain. The cat mint and rosemary bush we planted last year are doing very well, the lemon balm will be planted alongside them. We have a narrow rock-edged bed inside the back fence which I thought would be a good spot for herbs.
Rags, I have been slack lately not keeping up with this board but am hoping to change that!

The Stewartia is fragrant, yes. It prefers acidic , moist soil, morning sun, and afternoon shade, but seems to adapt well also. It's related to camellias including the one used for tea, and originated in Japan. This link shows the beautiful bark and fall foliage. www.uri.edu/cels/ceoc/coastalPlants/SpeciesPages/S_pseudocamellia.htmI brought home several kinds of primroses, also. It's pasta, beans, and peanut butter for us for a while.
