still going? When does wildfire season (allegedly) end? how is the smoke affecting asthmatics etc? They expect the fires to continue well into September. We haven't had frost yet. I'm thinking that a few nights below zero C might cool the fires down a bit? The smoke is very hard on anyone with respiratory problems as well as other health problems. We old folk are urged to stay indoors and avoid strenuous activity. A new wildfire broke out today in the south-east/central area of BC, which is raging out of control. They believe it was caused by a human. Time lapse video here of it growing; globalnews.ca/news/3695237/watch-the-kelowna-area-wildfire-erupt-like-a-volcano-in-this-stunning-timelapse/

Hope it has rained and calmed everything down Thank you, Megan. It rained hard here today, but I haven't heard yet if any rain fell where it was needed the most.

Yosemite's redwoods under threat from California fires after Los Angeles homes destroyedIs this in the drought affected area? In June I was staying with friends along with several other visitors, one of whom was a Californian from the area with severe water restrictions who did our washing up in the glass coffee pot. As I let the shower run on my sore back for a few extra seconds, I thought of my former colleague's 20 min!!! showers & other stories about life in drought affected areas. sandra

A former brother-in-law has lived his whole life in LA. The Los Angeles area is always in drought in my experience. When there's heavy rainfall there will be flooding and landslides...but their drought conditions continue. When he visited us in Maine the sight of so much green was overwhelming.
We've hauled enough water in our lives that we do not waste a single drop. A two minute shower would be sheer luxury for us, and a twenty minute shower unimaginable. It's still sponge baths in this house, while the new-two-years-ago shower parts wait for us to be able to have them installed. Having a sink in the bathroom (since last Christmas) is a wonderful help. I'm still hauling water for cooking and cleaning, but it's hauled from that sink rather than from the outside or basement spigots. (Maine is still in drought conditions too.)
Neighbors up the road from us were burned out Sunday morning. It was an old cape, younger than ours was, and it's a total loss. No insurance. The two parents and 4 children aged 7-18 got out alive. Part of the family stopped at our house to use the bathroom. They knew we would understand. We do. The memories do not leave us.

Maeve, How sad for your neighbours to lose their home and everything in it. I wonder how they will manage now? It must have been a little comfort to them to know that you would understand and a cause for more sadness for you as it stirred up the memories of your own great loss.
I'm very sad that you have such a hard life and am feeling a little guilty that, although I feel as if we live frugally compared to most around us, we have so many comforts and so much for which to be grateful.

It's a good life though, and when friends post about nice things like showers I am reminded such pleasant things do exist- that's good for hopes and plans for future improvements. No worries, rags! My husband and I are so very fortunate to have each other, and we remember that every day. That is a good way for me to balance the occasional "Wish we had" spells. Our neighbors will manage now by cleaning up and preparing for the next few months. We're hoping they can make the outbuilding on their land habitable for now. Both house and outbuilding used to be a little hospital run by a nurse in the early 1900'2. When I go by today I'll hope to offer a temporary electrical hook-up we used for power after our fire when we lived in a camper. Our Amish neighbors were checking on what they could do to help too, so that offers a very healthy community connection for this reclusive family and our new Amish neighbors.

it's great to live in a community. I only know a few people in my block of 20 apartments. Friends live a few miles away in a street of 27 houses & know everyone.

Hi, Sandra! We actually know very few of our neighbors. I have not found any real sense of community here. We do what we can to help others, hoping to be part of community building, but so far, it feels like the proverbial drop in a bucket. I just spent time downloading, printing, and marking neighbors' names on part of the town's tax map, hoping to put names to nearby parcels of land. Most adults here work away from town, and few local young adults find any reason to settle in their home town.

Sandra, Those fire whirls sound very frightening, tornadoes with flames. How sad that just as we are finally seeing some control over the fires that did so much damage in British Columbia, you are having to deal with the fires there. I hope that the arsonists will be caught and prevented from doing further damage.

Sandra, our neighbors are reportedly staying with family. The husband still has his pigs to feed every day, so we've had a couple of chats in passing. I believe plans are for them to move in to the refurbished former private hospital outbuilding mentioned earlier...sometime before winter. Local fundraising efforts are supposedly to be used for building a new house.
Arsonists are among the scum of the earth. We have our share here also.

maeve - as we know from your earlier posts, a very snowy, cold winter is not the place to live without good, warm shelter.
rags, I believe the arsonist was caught, but can't find a report.
